Limitless Soles

The Limitless Soles project challenged traditional footwear design by introducing a concept that lets users interchange shoe soles based on activity, terrain, or comfort preference. Created for a performance-focused brand targeting fitness and travel audiences, this innovative system was engineered from the ground up by Oxta Design to offer durability, ergonomic comfort, and seamless modularity—all in a sleek, wearable form.

Challenges & Objectives

Project Overview

Limitless Soles is a modular footwear innovation designed to give users full control over their comfort, support, and style—through a swappable sole system crafted from fabric, foam, and orthopedic-grade materials. Oxta Design led the product development from concept through to manufacturing preparation, focusing on a user experience that prioritises comfort without compromising on design.

Whether used for post-training recovery, daily wear, or light walking, Limitless Soles give users the power to adapt their shoe—just like they adapt their lifestyle.

Challenges

Our client came to us with an exciting challenge: to rethink the concept of shoe soles entirely. Instead of a one-size-fits-all design, they wanted to offer interchangeable, soft foam-based soles that could be custom-fit and comfort-oriented, especially for people with different support needs throughout the day.

Unlike performance-focused modular shoes with heavy rubber outsoles, Limitless Soles focused on lightweight, comfort-first design, ideal for recovery, home use, and indoor comfort—targeting athletes, seniors, and anyone seeking orthopedic-level foot relief.

Our goal was to bring this modular footwear concept to life, balancing aesthetics, comfort, and manufacturability.

Objectives

The design brief was clear: build a modular footwear system that is ultra-lightweight, orthopedic-friendly, and easy to use—without feeling like a medical product. Our core objectives included:

  1. Design an interchangeable sole system that allows users to switch between different comfort zones or footbed styles.

  2. Use soft-touch materials—including breathable fabric tops, comfort foam, and orthopedic foam inserts—to deliver a cloud-like feel.

  3. Minimise components and hardware, using clever construction and layering to keep the product light, minimal, and user-friendly.

  4. Create a product line suitable for flat-pack shipping, easy assembly, and scalable production with minimal waste.

  5. Provide CAD files, tech packs, and manufacturing support to help the client bring the product to market quickly and efficiently.

Final Outcome

The final Limitless Soles product is a beautifully simple, modular comfort system that allows users to personalise their shoe experience. Whether switching between a soft foam sole after a long walk, or using a firmer orthopedic insert for all-day support, the product offers true comfort on demand.

Oxta Design delivered:

  • A layered sole system that combines textile-wrapped comfort foam, orthopedic inserts, and breathable fabric for all-day use

  • A discreet yet secure attachment solution for swapping soles—easy for the user, invisible to the eye

  • Prototypes refined through comfort testing, weight distribution analysis, and wear trials

  • Full manufacturing documentation, including CAD models, BOMs, assembly guides, and sourcing recommendations
